VALUE ADDED TAX (VAT)

Value Added Tax (VAT) is one of the most complex and burdensome taxes for businesses. Between registration thresholds, multiple rates, partial exemption, and strict deadlines, it is easy to make expensive mistakes.

At Accountancy and Tax Crew, we take the stress out of VAT. Whether you need to register, file accurate returns, or plan for growth, we ensure you stay compliant while maximising legitimate VAT recovery.

What Is VAT?

VAT is a tax on most goods and services sold in the UK. If your business is VAT-registered, you must:

  • Charge VAT to your customers (output tax)
  • Pay VAT on most business purchases (input tax)
  • File regular VAT returns reporting the difference
  • Pay HMRC the net VAT owed (or claim a refund if input tax exceeds output tax)

Failing to register on time triggers automatic penalties and interest on unpaid VAT from the date you should have registered.

The 12-Month Rolling Test

Unlike Corporation Tax (which uses fixed accounting periods), VAT registration looks at any rolling 12-month period. This catches businesses with seasonal peaks.

Voluntary VAT Registration

Even if your turnover is below the VAT threshold, you can voluntarily register for VAT. This is often beneficial for:

  • Businesses selling to VAT-registered customers (they don’t mind paying VAT as they reclaim it)
  • Businesses with significant VAT on purchases (you can reclaim input VAT)
  • Start-ups expecting rapid growth (get ahead of mandatory registration)

We help you model whether voluntary registration makes financial sense for your business.

VAT Schemes: Choosing the Right One

HMRC offers different VAT schemes. Choosing the wrong one can cost you thousands. We help you select the optimal scheme for your business.
